Social Welfare Supports

In this edition, we delve into the various social welfare supports available for parents in Ireland. Parenting comes with its unique set of challenges and responsibilities, and understanding the available supports can make a significant difference. Here’s an overview of the key social welfare supports designed to assist parents.

1. **Child Benefit**

Child Benefit is a monthly payment to parents or guardians of children under 16 years of age, or under 18 if the child is in full-time education or has a disability. The current rate is €140 per month for each child.

2. **One-Parent Family Payment**

The One-Parent Family Payment is a means-tested payment for men and women who are bringing up children without the support of a partner or Spouse. It is available to parents who are not cohabiting and whose youngest child is under 7 years of age.

3. **Working Family Payment**

The Working Family Payment (WFP) is a weekly, tax-free payment for employees with children. It supports those who are on low pay. The amount depends on the number of children and the family income (for both parents).

4. **Maternity Benefit**

Maternity Benefit is a payment for employed and self-employed women who are on maternity leave from work and have sufficient social insurance (PRSI) contributions.

5. **Paternity Benefit**

Paternity Benefit is a payment made to employed and self-employed fathers. It is paid for 2 weeks and can be taken any time within the first 6 months following the birth or adoption of a child.

6. **Parental Leave**

Parental leave allows parents to take time off work to care for their children. Each parent is entitled to 26 weeks per child, which can be taken until the child turns 12 years old.

7. **Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance**

This is a means-tested once-off payment aimed at helping parents meet the cost of uniforms and footwear for children attending school.

Applications can be made online through MyWelfare.ie during the application period.
