Being Strong in the Lord in Our Finances

Recognising God as Our Provider
Before delving into financial planning, savings, or investments, it’s important to recognise that everything we have comes from God. Whether we have much or little, we are stewards of what He provides. In Deuteronomy 8:18, we are reminded, “But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth.” With this mindset, our financial decisions should reflect trust in God’s provision and obedience to His principles.
Financial Planning as Stewardship
One of the ways we can demonstrate strength in the Lord in our finances is through wise planning. Just as we plan our spiritual lives through prayer and study of God’s Word, we should also plan our finances to ensure we act responsibly with what God has given us.
In Proverbs 21:5, “The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty.” This means having a budget, setting financial goals, and living within our means is important. A budget helps us allocate resources for our needs, savings, giving, investments, and even enjoying the fruits of our labour, all while staying accountable to God's principles.
Saving for the Future with Wisdom
Saving is an act of prudence that reflects our trust in God's provision while preparing for future needs. Proverbs 6:6-8 encourages us to “Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! It stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest.” Saving for emergencies, future needs, or even retirement is an essential part of financial stewardship.
Being strong in the Lord does not mean ignoring practical steps like saving and investments; rather, it means approaching saving with faith and trusting God for guidance while using the wisdom He has given us to achieve this purpose. We need to establish an emergency fund (ideally few monthly salary), save for long-term goals, and ensure we make wise decisions with what we store up.
Investing with Integrity and Purpose
Investing is another area where we can honour God with our finances. The parable of the talents in Matthew 25:14-30 shows us the importance of wisely multiplying what God has given us. Investment is a great decision but daunting it is however important for us to seek financial advice and godly counsel hence acting with discernment is key.
Our investments must equally align with biblical values, this must be done to grow our resources for the right reasons—whether that be providing for our families (children going to universities), buying a house, expanding God's kingdom, or planning for retirement.
We should also be mindful of the attitude with which we approach investing, are we motivated by greed, or are we seeking to honour God through our stewardship? Always check your heart and intent to ensure that the decisions you make glorify God, rather than relying on material wealth for security. This means putting God at the centre of our plan.
Giving Generously with a Cheerful Heart
Part of being strong in the Lord in our finances is to give generously. 2 Corinthians 9:7 says, “Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” Generosity is a key aspect of financial strength in God’s eyes. It shows that our trust is not in money but in the One who provides.
By prioritising giving, we reflect God's heart of love and provision for others. Whether it is tithing, supporting missions, or helping those in need, giving is a spiritual exercise that strengthens our faith and deepens our reliance on God.
Trusting God in Every Season
Finally, being strong in the Lord in our finances means trusting Him through every financial season—whether in times of abundance or during times of need. Philippians 4:12-13 reminds us that Paul learned the secret of being content in any situation, whether well-fed or hungry, whether in plenty or want. His strength came from Christ, and so should ours.
In whatever season we are in, whether financial prosperity or facing challenges, we can trust that God is in control. Our financial planning, saving, and investing should always be underpinned by faith, trusting that God will meet our needs as we seek to honour Him in all we do.
Conclusion
As we reflect on Ephesians 6:10, let us remember that true financial strength is not found in the balance of our bank accounts but in our trust in the Lord’s mighty power. Through careful planning, saving, investing, and giving, we can honour God with our finances. By applying biblical principles to our financial lives, we not only strengthen our earthly resources but also store up treasures in heaven.
May we all continue to be strong in the Lord, not just in our spiritual walks, but also in how we manage the resources He so graciously provides.
